Overview

The Alumni Mentoring Network gives you the freedom to connect with mentees in a way that fits your motivations and availability, wherever you are situated in the world.

One-off meetings suit mentors who cannot commit to an ongoing mentoring partnership, but who still want to share their experiences with the alumni community. Mentors who wish to guide others through complex careers questions and explorations can do so through ongoing mentoring partnerships.

Eligibility

Mentors must have graduated from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Applications are welcome from alumni from all disciplines and from across the world.

The mentees

Mentees are other alumni of the university and can range from recent graduates to more experienced alumni who might be looking for industry insights or a career change. To mentor a current student, please see the Alumni as Mentors programme

Application and connection process

Sign up to the platform and create your mentor profile.
To help mentees find you, we ask you to provide information about your academic background, career history, as well as your preferences and motivations for joining the Alumni Mentoring Network.

Choose your preferred connection type and set your own availability.
You can connect with mentees in one-off meetings or ongoing partnerships, or both. You decide yourself how many meeting or mentoring requests you can receive when you set up your profile and, if your circumstances change, you can update your availability to suit. Mentees find you and send requests for connections
Mentees, who have also completed a profile on their background, preferences and motivations, can browse available mentors on the platform and, depending on your preferences, can request either a one-off meeting or a mentoring partnership. You will receive a notification of the request and can choose to accept or decline the request.

To streamline the process, you can link your calendar to the platform or specify times in the week when you have more time, so that mentees have an idea of your availability for meetings.

"Being a mentor is a great chance to hone some of the skills that are so important if you want to get better at managing teams: coaching, active listening, leading etc. It's also a good opportunity to work with future leaders and build your Wellington network." - mentor on Alumni as Mentors Programme

Your profile information

Each application is checked against our alumni records, to ensure the platform provides a dedicated space for our alumni community.

As a mentor, your profile (including name, location, background, and motivations) will be visible to all mentees on the platform and will help mentees determine whether you are the right mentor for their needs.

Your contact details will only be shared with mentees after you have accepted their request to connect.
If you sign up as both a mentor and a mentee, information relevant to your mentee role will be visible to mentors you request connections with on the platform.

All the information you provide (including your date of birth and platform activities) will be visible to administrators.
